SLEEP APNOEA

ANTI-SNORING

Sleep is the basis of good health, so when it is obstructed it can be disruptive to your daily life. One in every 10 Australians experience snoring in their lifetime. Sleep apnoea is a more serious condition that can lead to heightened risk of disease. There are many treatments we offer to help treat your sleep apnoea and improve your quality of life.

  • WHAT IS SLEEP APNOEA?

Obstructive sleep apnoea happens while you sleep. During this time, your body relaxes, your muscles soften and your tongue drops to the back of your throat, reducing airflow and creating a vibration when you breathe that we hear as snoring. With sleep apnoea, your airway periodically closes and prevents your breathing for 10-60 seconds depending on the case severity.

  • what are the treatments?

There are a variety of treatment options available to those with sleep apnoea. These include a C-PAP machine, a device that utilises a mask over the face while you are asleep to equalize pressure in the throat, which is the gold standard for sleep apnoea treatment. For a less obstructive treatment option, we custom make mandibular advancement splints (MAS), which push the jaw forward and allow more air through the air passages while you are asleep. A discussion with our dentists can inform if this is a viable option for you.
